Freaky Snow and Madison #1

Hey!
I left early to get to my gig in Madison tonight. Good thing I did! When I left home it was in the 70's and as I got closer to Buffalo on the 90, the sky turned black, birds started flying like mad and it dropped 30 degrees! And then...it started snowing. And it didn't stop. I pulled over at a motel and in the middle of the night, the heat turned off. No power in that whole region AND 90W was shut in the morning between Buffalo and Erie, PA and the ground (and my car) was covered in 2 feet of snow! So I dug my car out (pulled my back in the process- it's like I'm 100 years old sometimes) went south to get west again down small roads and farmland. I don't think I've ever seen the trees bright orange, yellow and red and covered in snow before. Very surreal and very beautiful. So I managed to get out and I'm only about 2 hours from Madison. I'm opening for Willy Porter tonight and tomorrow and I'm so excited! Then I'm hauling butt back to NY to play with Andy Friedman for the release of his new record, "Taken Man." (http://www.andyfriedman.net/), going home for a few days, picking up my new merch seller Nicole and heading back to IL, IA and....Madison. So do a snow dance in reverse for me and I'll see you in the heartland either this time around or next!xoxoxonz

Last Toad Gig

Hi everyone,
It's been an amazing month of Wednesday nights at Toad. Sad to see it end. We had Melissa Ferrick the first week and it was the second time Andy Rice, the amazing upright bass player had ever even HEARD my songs and the show was great. And then Edie Carey played. It was a little slice of Cambridge heaven. The second week it was POURING rain and I was absolutely soaked by the time I got all my gear inside. But Kate Klim let the sunshine back in and the folks that did show up were so sweet. And Andy and I had some great moments too I thought. Then last week I was joined by Joe Lilly who blew me away. He's been a friend for a while and I've heard his record with his band The Mystics but I'd never heard him live. That voice! Like Tom Waits and Van Ronk and a little Van Morrison in for sweetness. Wow. And my friend Trina Hamlin was in town visiting me and sat in too on the harmonica. Damn. That girl is so amazing. Subtle and strong and intuitive. And she can kinda sing too. ;) The place was absolutely packed which felt really nice and homey and it's been so great to hear from folks that they're enjoying the weekly gig. It's pushed me a lot- to write, to cover some new tunes, to try new things out. Thank you so much to the people who've been coming, telling their friends and being so amazingly supportive in my new hometown.
I played with Melissa Ferrick on Friday at a great place called Jonathan's in Ogunquit, ME. We had a great time and she was amazing as usual. Ryan Montbleau opened for her and I'm now obsessed with him. AMAZING vocalist, the purest whistle that I've ever heard (aside from my dad, Melissa's mom and maybe Matt the Electrician), smart and funny lyrics and a real jazz sensibility. Pure and real and untouched. Check him out if you haven't already. I haven't liked someone's music so much in a long time. Such a great thing to discover new music, isn't it?
So I'm sad to see the Toad gigs end but so excited for the last show. Bill Grady is joining me and I can't wait to hear what he's up to. He's one of my favorite people and favorite writers ever so I can't wait for you to see him if you haven't before. You'll fall in love.
And then I'm off again for some festivals that I'm really excited about. National Women's was so fun- great to see so many friends and make some new ones. Ottawa Blues was amazing. The Canadian festivals are always so right on. AND I got to sign a guitar for a benefit auction right next to Bonnie Raitt and Rickie Lee Jones. Doesn't really get better....
See you at Toad or down the road....thank you for all your love and support.nz

Last night was the last of several performances over the last few weeks with international treasure Erika Luckett. We had so many beautiful adventures together in Texas and New Mexico and playing music with her is like taking a master class, languishing in healing hot springs and being embraced and surrounded by true creativity and love. I was so sad to see her go but we'll have to plan more shows together in the future. In fact, we'll both be at the Houston International Festival on April 29th that's going to be so amazing. We're pairing up with some authors to create new songs and works based on their novels. I've never done anything quite like it and am so excited to see how it turns out.
So I'm heading to Albuquerque today, watching that clear blue sky and red earth as I drive and then on to Tucson tomorrow! Then I go to WV, Colorado and on to the midwest. Zigzagging across this great land and making so many new friends. Thank you for coming out to the shows and supporting me. You carry me along...
With love, nz.
